'The Fabric of Life - DNA'
'The Fabric of Life - DNA'

I have always stitched as my Mother, Grandmother and my Great Grandmother did before me. It occurred to me that many people from Macclesfield who worked within the textile industry must have done so like their ancestors before them. The 'fabric of life' must therefore be in their DNA as it is in mine. This wall hanging represents imagery of the double helix, with some silk stitched within the cells itself. The cells have been created using free machine embroidery on water soluble material, DNA markers have been used in conjunction with the chromosomes made from old jeans (or genes!) The very essence of life itself is hung on an old spindle, similar to those used within the silk museum, it hangs as a flag of recognition for all textile artists everywhere.
